    Organization: Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal) ensures fairness in the civil justice system for the most vulnerable members of our community. From Silicon Valley to Napa Valley, we help clients protect their livelihoods, their health, and their families. Our clients include the working poor, families with children, foster youth, seniors, immigrants, veterans, and persons with disabilities. Through our regional county offices, our mobile advocacy clinics, and our nationally-recognized Legal Advice Line, BayLegal prevents domestic violence and sexual assault, increases economic stability, protects consumers, expands access to healthcare, and prevents homelessness.     The Position: The Pro Bono Director is responsible for deepening relationships with law firms and corporate legal departments, as well as expanding BayLegal's affirmative litigation through co-counsel with the private bar. The Pro Bono Director reports to the Executive Director and serves as a member of BayLegal's leadership team. Responsibilities include:

    • Develop and monitor BayLegal pro bono projects, including: limited scope or full representation, participation in BayLegal's legal clinics, and co-counsel on individual cases and impact litigation
    • Assist in the development and presentation of substantive law trainings to the private bar attorneys
    • Oversee and maintain co-counsel relationships and monitor case status
    • Work with Director of Litigation and Advocacy to ensure productive relationships with pro bono co-counsel on impact cases
    • Actively engage in trainings and meetings concerning pro bono and participate in pro bono working groups/committees
    • Support pro bono relationships between the private bar and BayLegal attorneys in all seven counties
    • Support relationship-building efforts with local bar associations
    • Manage award nominations for our outstanding pro bono volunteers
    • Maintain a pro bono panel for case referrals and manage cases referred to pro bono attorneys
    • Recruit and coordinate placement of BayLegal volunteers and law clerks
    • Supervise and manage the work of BayLegal's Pro Bono Program Associate
    • Actively participate in BayLegal's development and communications activities
    • Support BayLegal's overall mission, standards, policies, procedures, and confidentiality guidelines
    • Ensure pro bono data integrity in BayLegal's Salesforce instance
    • Oversee pro bono interests in development of new case management system
    • Work with HR department to incorporate volunteer recruitment in new online HR platform

    The Successful Candidate Is/Has:

    • Curious and self-directed with an ability to anticipate what needs to be done
    • Demonstrated experience envisioning and implementing new projects
    • Strong organizational, language, and communication skills
    • Exceptional listener and strategist who can thrive in a collegial environment
    • Experience managing volunteers and giving presentations
    • Self-directed and comfortable working in a fast paced, ever-changing environment
    • Experience working in legal services or at a large private firm
    • Membership in good standing in a State Bar Association required; California preferred
